Coimbatore prison authorities have sent a proposal to the state government to set up a unit for manufacturing sanitary napkins at the special prison for women, reported TOI. The special prison is located inside the Coimbatore central prison.

Experts to train inmates

M Senthilkumar, superintendent of prisons, said there are 27 women convicts at the special prison for women. He told TOI that the authorities plan to set up the napkin manufacturing unit at the special prison soon. The women will be trained by experts for the the entire process. The prison authorities sent the proposal to the state government about two weeks ago. Also, they have sought Rs 5 lakh to instal the unit.

Adept at handicrafts

The women convicts were also given training on making handicrafts, handbags, jute bags and toys by NGOs. Not only this, these women also made ear rings made up of papers and all these products were marketed by various NGOs.

In 2014, a sanitary napkin making unit was set up at the Coimbatore central prison. Everyday, almost 2,400 sanitary napkins are produced every day at the unit. More than 90 male inmates work on producing these. The authorities send the sanitary napkins named ‘Freedom’ to government hospitals across the state. The unit not only makes the convicts employable but also will help them later for their rehabilitation.

Sabarmati jail’s women inmates to make sanitary napkins too

In Gujarat, women inmates of the Sabarmati Central Prison have taken up the task of making sanitary napkins, reported Indian Express. The sanitary pads are made at the manufacturing unit installed in the women’s barrack of the Sabarmati jail. These will be given free of cost to all women inmates placed in various prisons of the state.

This initiative serves to promote better menstrual hygiene among women inmates in jails across Gujarat. The  manufacturing unit was installed last week by a city-based NGO in the women’s barrack of the Sabarmati jail.
