There was a time when women had to wait till they were adults to make decisions for themselves and others around them. Thankfully, with education and empowerment girls as young as 12, have been making a mark by helping others who aren’t as privileged. One this Children’s Day, SheThePeople lists some of the most influential young girls in the world today.

 

Malala Yousafzai

Talking of extraordinary children, it is impossible to ignore Yousafzai, who at age of 17 has already taken a bullet fighting for women’s educational rights. Last year, the TIME magazine listed her as one of the ‘100 Most influential people in the world.’ She will also receive the Nobel Peace prize in December, this year.

 

Madison Kimrey

At just the age of 12, Madison Kimrey became a political activist demanding youth involvement in politics, the humane treatment of animals, and women’s rights. A native of North Carolina, U.S.A., Kimrey has spoken at a Moral Mondays event in her state and at the “We are Woman” rally in Washington DC. She also runs a personal blog where she publishes political writings and opinions.

 

Sejal Hathi

At the tender age of 15, when other girls were busy with dealing with high-school problems, Sejal Hathi, started a non-profit organization called ‘Girls Helping Girls’ to empower women socially and economically all around the world. The organization has till date connected 30,000 girls in 22 countries for support.

Rocio Ortega

Right from high school, Ortega has been an activist. Funded by the UN, she started ‘Girl Up’, to support girls in developing regions. She has also worked with members of Congress and believes, “Everyone has leadership potential. It’s just a matter of finding your passions and learning to act upon them. 

 

Hannah Godefa

At 15, Hanna Godefa from Ethiopia created a resource mobilization project called Pencil Mountain, which till date, has delivered over half a million school resources to children. She has also been appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF for Ethiopia, for her work.
